Commissioning Engineer

The Role

You will oversee, manage, and execute the commissioning of high voltage plant, apparatus, and systems—verifying functionality and performance before energisation. Your input will be critical throughout the project lifecycle, from site assessment to documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate sites and equipment suitability for commissioning HV plant and apparatus.
  • Design and implement commissioning plans and inspection/test plans (ITPs) to meet customer requirements.
  • Supervise system installation, ensuring compliance with specifications, regulatory standards, and best practices.
  • Lead comprehensive testing on switchgears, cables, battery chargers, transformers, signal panels, and GLVPs.
  • Conduct thorough electrical testing including AC/DC, HV/LV systems, and SCADA communications.
  • Perform advanced ductor, insulation resistance, AC Hipot, VLF, and primary/secondary injection tests (using Omicron CMC 356 or equivalent).
  • Terminate and gland multicore/signal cables and carry out continuity/verification checks.
  • Optimise system operation by programming relays and applying logical modifications per protection studies.
  • Champion health, safety, and environmental compliance during all commissioning activities.
  • Deliver quality assurance, maintaining meticulous documentation of results and compliance records.
  • Act as a positive ambassador for the business during interactions with external and internal customers.
  • Liaise closely with stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of project milestones.
  • Provide mentorship and practical training to junior engineers on new systems and safety standards.
  • Offer on-site support as required by senior management.

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Qualified to HNC/Degree level in Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience in commissioning and maintaining HV switchgear (including functional checks, CT/VT analysis, transformer and cable testing, and advanced fault finding).
  • Thorough understanding of schematics, ITPs, and protection studies.
  • Proficient in use of advanced HV test equipment: Omicron CMC356, Omicron CT analyser/CPC100/Franeo 600/Testrano, Sverker 650, HVA 68TD VLF, Megger MIT515/DLRO10HD, Digi bridge, PFT-1003.
  • Sound technical judgement and strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and customer service abilities.
  • Eligible for ECS or EUSR, and a full UK driving licence held for at least 12 months.

Desirable:

  • City & Guilds 17/18th Edition (BS7671 Wiring Regulations), Advanced Level Electrical Apprenticeship or AP15/OP40 certification.
  • Authorised or competent person for Permit to Work.
